conference on the latest on the school shooting in newtown, connecticut. today, we are focused entirely on newtown. approximately an hour and a half outside of new york city, newtown, connecticut, is a small commuter town locateded in fairfield kocounty. it is a predominantly middle-class white community with approximately 30,000 people. they have several schools and synagogues and churches and it has a rotary club and basketball league like many other towns, but yesterday, as many of you know, newtown became the latest statistic of what is a disturbing pattern of mass gun violence. a gunman opened up fire against schoolchildren and staff at sandy hook elementary and killing at latest count 20 children and 6 adults. the president addressed the nation yesterday in response to the tragedy. >> as a country, we have been through this too many times, whether it is an elementary school in newtown or a shopping mall in oregon or a temple in wisconsin or a movie theater in aurora or a street coroner chicago, these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. >> the

. i'm wolf blitzer, reporting here from newtown, connecticut. let's bring in our national correspondent, susan candiotti. she is joining us with more information, the very latest on the investigation, what are you learning, susan? >> reporter: hi, wolf, we're not going to dwell on the shooter's name, but he is twenty-year-old adam lanza, and we're learning today more on how vicious the attacks were. this information coming to us from the chief medical examiner. >> all the wounds that i know of at this point were caused by the weapon. i only did seven of the autopsies. the victims i had ranged from three to eleven, and i only saw two of them with close range shooting. this is a sample, i really don't have more information. the bullets are designed in such a fashion that the energy -- this is very clinical, i shouldn't be saying this. but the energy deposited in the tissue, so the bullet stays in. >> reporter: now the long weapon that the chief medical examiner referred to is one of the three guns that our sources tell us were found next to the shooter in the classroom. you'

colleague from connecticut, rosa delauro, has introduced that bill year after year. you said that the federal government can borrow money, 10-year notes, even 15-year notes, somewhere around 1.5%, maybe toward 2%. if we were to borrow that, put it into an infrastructure bank and then loan money to infrastructure projects that have a cash flow, sanitation facility, water facility, toll bridges and numerous other kinds of infrastructure, which is desperately needed, we could have a financing system that over time would actually make money for the federal government. could borrow at 1.5%, loan at 1.75%, have a margin there, the money would flow back in. you'd get that revolving. the president has actually proposed this in his american jobs act. he's picked this up during his debate, the fiscal cliff negotiations, put it back on the table. we ought to be doing that. in doing so we will create tens of thousands, indeed hundreds of thousands of american jobs. american jobs. and if we couple that with buy american so that the equipment, the steel, the concrete, the other ingredients

children and teachers and others in connecticut, it is a time for congress to begin a thoughtful dialogue on what we can do to deal with these mass casualty incidences in our country. they have been going on for some time, but perhaps when we see the faces of children, principals, teachers, and others that burns upon our hearts and motivates us to take further action. i want to make sure that, mr. speaker, that congress takes the appropriate action in a thoughtful, willful, determined way, and not jump to quick conclusions as if simple fixes will prevent this from happening. first, to the parents of children across america who are asking questions, mr. speaker, i'd like to offer some of this advice and also in my background as a psychologist, it's important for people to remember this, parents should be asking their children what they have heard about the incident. we should listen to their concerns and their emotions. we should answer their questions with age appropriate information. we should support and comfort and reassure them of their safety at home and school. we should observe and

, connecticut, memorial sites where americans around the country have gathered to support each other and honor the victims of the school sho shooting will now become of a permanent memorial. newtown, connecticut, collectman joins me on the phone. she's leading the effort. thank you for joining us. tell me a little bit about this effort to preserve these memorials. what's the process and when will it begin? >> the process will begin probably later this week. the magnitude of the outpouring of sympathy and flowers and teddy bears and beautiful prayers and posters and signs is really overwhelming and very much valued and honored by our town. so we have decided that we would convert all of those items, those tributes into product that would be part of our permanent memorial. we don't know what the nature of that memorial will be or even where it will be located at this point, but we know we will be preserve all those items probably in the form of soil or in some related form if the product is inappropriate for soil, it might become a brick or something of substance that would be part of this perma

're leaving in new jersey, out your door or new york city area, southern connecticut, some showers are about to move through. they're already coming in pretty good now, moving on interstate 78 and 80 across new jersey and into the greater new york city area. they'll be in and out quickly by 8:00 a.m. they should be overwith. it's little area of showers. you can see it right here. southern hudson valley to just north of philadelphia. that's about it. those will quickly blow through long island and also through connecticut as we go throughout the early morning. after that, the warm front goes through and will warm up in a hurry. a pool of cold air moved in overnight over new england. hartford at 32. it's 17 degrees warmer right now in new york. but that cold air that just temporarily settled in overnight will be pushed out in a hurry during the day to day. all the warm air to the south will win out. temperatures are going to rise rapidly. should head up to 58 today in hartford after starting out in 32. that is pretty incredible, almost a 30 degree temperature rise during the daylight hours. 73

join the president in mourning the victims of that horrible tragedy in connecticut. he's appoint vice president biden to lead a commission and when the vice president's recommendations come forward we'll certainly take them into consideration. john fuglesang now john boehner may say he'll consider but he did give himself a good amount of wiggle room. do you hear that right now? that's the friend of the nra revving up their spin machine. fox news reported the gun lobby has remained silent to allow for a proper period of mourning but that soon they would start to "push back." because, you see guns don't kill people but nra people who own congresspeople make it a lot easier for o derange people to get gun and kill innocent people. tomorrow, the nra will hold a press conference outlining their position. and an honest source gave fox news a preview saying that the nra would push politicians to talk about hollywood and the video games that teach young kids how to shoot heads. if you really want to stop incidents like this
